Sarah took what she thought was her usual dose ofCannabidiol at the end of her workday a few weeks ago. Sarah didn’t notice that the label was different when she received a new bottle from the same brand. She was a lot more relaxed than she anticipated. She remembers looking into space while eating dinner. She realized that she had taken something called delta-8 THC. This one got her stoned because it claimed to be legal.
Sarah discovered that the active ingredient in weed is delta-8 THC. The less-intoxicating predecessor would not exist without it. After the legalization of industrial hemp, American producers are looking to see what they can make from the plant. This wasCannabidiol. They got more creative.
Delta-8, which is found in very small amounts in cannabis, was mostly used for animal studies. Adding acid and solvent to the molecule will change it. A lot ofCannabidiol allowed for experimentation and led to a whole new range of products that goes beyond just getting high.
There are no federal testing requirements for industrial hemp products, so you don’t necessarily know what you’re getting. Grant Boatman of Canna River says their products go through rigorous safety testing, but that can’t be said for many on the market. He says that they go above and beyond to make sure the products are clean. There are a lot of bad actors. Delta-8 prerolls, which are generally made ofCBD flower sprayed with the lab-derived cannabinoid, are one product that should be avoided.
There are also safety concerns and the issue of whether or not it is legal. Some states have made it illegal to sell delta-8 on a federal level, but advocates argue that since it is derived from a legal substance, it should be able to be sold. Shawn Hauser is a Colorado lawyer who specializes in cannabis law. She says that products intended for human consumption have to be legal under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Delta-8 products aren’t. The FDA is only cracking down on companies making health claims
In states with legal weed, some operators have opted to use cannabidiol from marijuana delta 8 vape juice plants, which aren’t legal for interstate commerce, but do have the benefit of being part of a regulated market, offering the customer more confidence. The state programs include robust regulatory frameworks like mini FDAs. They have control over everything from packaging guidelines to manufacturing standards. Alexi Chialtas, whose company WUNDER is licensed to make cannabis drinks under California’s marijuana program, sees expansion of available cannabinoids as an opportunity to target moods. He says that they decided to blend both delta-9-THC and delta-8 in order to have a better experience. It is the closest to the feeling of being in a dream.
The proliferation of delta-8 has opened the door to experimentation with more obscure cannabinoids, which has scientists more concerned Klumpers says that Delta 10 has never been studied. I couldn’t find a study of the drug in animals.
It is not known if HHC could have adverse reactions on humans. MarkScialdone, an organic chemist who patented the process to make a form of HHCA called HHCA, notes that there could be unforeseen consequences from eating a molecule that hasn’t gone through human testing. He points out that the discovery of hydrogenated vegetable shortening improved shelf stabilization of food products, but also introduced a new type of diet to the US. Trans fats are made in the process of hydrogenation of fats. Is chronic use of cannabinoids a cause of chronic health conditions? We are not sure yet.
